United Airlines was originally founded as USA Airways in August of 2009 in Richmond, Virginia as a alternate option to flying out of the crowded Washington DC airports. The airline started service to Memphis, Tennessee and Tampa, Florida before expanding service to Pensacola, Florida - the headquarters of the WE LOVE FLYING alliance, which the airline is still a member of today, and took over as General Manager in June of 2011. Due to other commitments, USA Airways voluntarily stepped down as GM of WE LOVE FLYING in late 2013 after over 2 years leading the alliance. USA Airways in mid-February 2014 to become the VGM of the alliance following a sharp decline in members and the alliance's rank.
Air Norway was founded in January of 2012 in Oslo, Norway as a way to increase travel to the Scandinavian region with little air travel. Air Norway began cargo service to many destinations in Oslo and the UK. Passenger service soon followed. Air Norway is one of the founding members of the GALA alliance, and is now the General Manager of WorldTeam.
In June of 2014 as an unexpected final move for integration, USA Airways officially changed its name to United Airlines. The renamed airline serves over 150 destinations worldwide and operates a fleet of over 120 aircraft. The airline currently maintains hubs in Washington DC, Chicago, Los Angeles, Charlotte, Seattle, New York, focus cities in Dallas and Richmond, a European hub in Manchester, England, an Asian hub in Tokyo, Japan, and a Oceanic hub in Sydney, Australia. Executive headquarters for the airline are in the same building as United International headquarters in downtown Chicago.
