USA International was founded following the secret purchase of Air Norway by USA Airways. Following the secret buyout, the top executives of the two airlines, Mr. Lewis Welch of USA Airways as well as Mr. Andrew Lewis and Mr. Jake Greene of Air Norway met in Paris right before the 2013 Paris Air Show and decided that the new airline should have a more global feel, and thus decided to rename the parent company of USA Airways to USA International. As part of the transaction, Air Norway subsidiary US Airways would merge with USA Airways. The merger would move the headquarters of the airline to Los Angeles, from the only home USA Airways has ever had, Richmond, Virginia.
In Paris, the executives announced that international law prevented USA International from holding a controlling stake in Air Norway and because of that, the Air Norway brand would be sold to an undisclosed company with USA International buying a 49% stake in that company, later to be revealed as MCXpress led by a returning Mr. MC. Executives said later that Air Norway subsidiary Air Columbia would be shutdown with resources focused instead on Air Australia. Using resources from Air Columbia, USA International pumped significant investment into the airline and now holds 49% ownership. The new company also revealed executive changes as a result of the buyout and merger:
It was decided that Air Norway CEO, Andrew Lewis, would take over as chairman of USA International, with USA Airways CEO, Lewis Welch, maintaining his position as Chief Executive Officer of both USA Airways and USA International. Jake Greene, the Chief Operating Officer of Air Norway, was appointed as Executive Vice-President of International Operations for USA Airways, and also acts as the company's representative towards airlines in which USA International maintains any kind of financial stake.
In June 2014, USA Airways and USA International officially changed their names to United Airlines and United International, respectively. The name change also included moving the headquarters of the company to Chicago. The change in names and the movement of the headquarters of the airline and parent company was a move to unify operations and give the company a more international feel given investments into foreign airlines in recent years.
